Katelyn + Dylan // Blue Ridge Mountain Wedding at Mountain Magnolia Inn // Hot Springs, NC

Dylan and I are both from western North Carolina and we will always consider the Blue Ridge Mountains our home. Most of our favorite memories have been made in these beautiful mountains and we wanted to be surrounded by them during our wedding weekend. We could not have picked a more perfect venue than the Mountain Magnolia Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast nestled in the middle of Hot Springs, NC.

My entire immediate family plus aunts, uncles, cousins and the bridal party stayed at the beautiful inn and garden house. One of my favorite parts of the weekend was waking up in the morning to a huge breakfast buffet with pounds of crispy bacon. It was so wonderful to be able to relax on the front porch with gorgeous views, fresh coffee, and all of the people I love the most sharing breakfast together.

Believe it or not, the day of the wedding I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. I had not had a trial run and I wasn’t even sure if I wanted it up or down. My bridesmaids were busy making fun of me when I remembered I had pinned some hairstyles about 8 months before when I was in the early stages of wedding planning. I pulled up my Pinterest and….. “I like that one, let’s do that”. Cara from the Water Lily Salon in Asheville was absolutely amazing. She took one look at the picture and recreated the hairstyle. Honestly, she made it even more beautiful than the photo. I couldn’t have been happier with my hair on my wedding day. The Water Lily sent two stylists to our site and were very reasonably priced. I absolutely loved all of the updos they did for my bridesmaids. Everyone looked stunning.

I rarely wear any make-up so I was a little nervous about having my make-up professionally done. I wanted to do my own, but my mom convinced me to contact Pop of Color in Asheville. Elizabeth Hayward was my make up artist. This woman is amazing. I talked to her on the phone for the first time a week before my wedding, about the time I was starting to freak out a little bit about all the little details I still had to sort out. She was so sweet and enthusiastic that she really got me excited again about the day. My make-up was perfect. It made such a huge difference in my wedding photos, yet I did not feel like it was over the top at all. I felt beautiful. I loved it, and I had so much fun talking to Elizabeth while getting ready. This knock out make-up artist used to be a river-rafting guide. That is how you know you are in good hands :)

I found my dress at a small store in Waynesville, NC called “The Marriage Vine”. I popped in there one day with a friend of mine not expecting to find anything I liked. I had already been dress shopping several times at that point. Finding a dress was difficult for me because I don’t wear a lot of dresses. I felt silly in most of them. I was really impressed with the selection of gorgeous gowns. Once I found my dress, I never doubted my choice. I was in love with it. It was whimsical and fun and I felt really comfortable wearing it. We made a lot of alterations to my dress and Melissa the seamstress did a wonderful job. I would definitely recommend checking out this shop if you are in the area.

...One of my favorite parts of looking through the wedding photos was seeing Jason’s shots of the groomsmen getting ready. Obviously I missed out on this part of the day, and I love looking back and seeing all the guys and my husband having such a great time together. I should have known someone would have brought PBR!

I am definitely not the most feminine girl in the world, and I don’t think there is one single pink article of clothing in my closet. There are hiking boots, backpacks, and climbing gear, but no pink. Most of my friends were very surprised when I told them I was doing mostly pink for the wedding. I can’t explain it. For my wedding I wanted romantic, and pretty, and pink. It is the exact opposite of who I am on most days, but I loved the way it turned out. The colors were so beautiful with all the natural greenery around. It all felt like a dream.

I purchased all of my decorations, and hopefully will be able to pass them along to another bride. Unfortunately for my dad, I love all things hanging. With the help of family, he hung all the bud vases from the tree branch with twine for the ceremony. He also hung mercury glass mason jars and candles over the bridal table. So romantic! My little sister made the adorable Mr. and Mrs. signs hanging from our chairs at dinner. I have a pretty wonderful family!

I will never forget the way I felt the moment that I turned to come down the aisle and saw my husband to be, and that gorgeous tree, and the hanging vases. That moment was frozen in time. Most of the wedding day really is a blur, but I remember exactly how I felt in that moment so vividly.

I decided to walk out to “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. I figured it is almost impossible to hear that song without feeling happy, and I didn’t want my guests to cry! I told Dylan several times I specifically chose this song to keep people from crying. Turns out this song had the opposite effect. At least three people came up to me during the reception and said something along the lines of, “I was doing fine until ‘Here Comes the Sun’ came on, then I just lost it.”

Our dog Aspen is a wild woman. She is definitely our best pal and we take her with us almost everywhere. When we adopted her she would pull so hard on walks that her front paws never touched the ground. Needless to say she has some ENERGY. When we decided to make her the flower girl/ring bearer/dog of honor (we drew the line at officiant), we fully expected her to do something crazy or just bark for the entire ceremony. I was almost counting on her to be somewhat disruptive to take a little of the attention off me. We were absolutely shocked when she laid down for the whole ceremony. She was so comfortable that we had to drag her away when we turned to walk out.

...I made her dog of honor collar with the help of my mother in law and her sewing skills. It was so easy to make, and I absolutely love all of her pictures. She also had quite the time ripping it to shreds after the family photos. I didn’t even try to stop her!

The weekend we got married I am pretty sure it was raining constantly everywhere in the state of North Carolina except Hot Springs. Most people had to drive through downpours on their way to the wedding. We were very blessed is all I can say. It decided to pour on us for the hour we had planned to be under the tent eating, and it stopped just in time. The rain cooled it off a little and the party continued!

We skipped place cards. Dylan and I have done a lot of traveling and backpacking in the National Parks of the US and Canada. We fell in love and made some of our very best memories on these trips, and we wanted to share that with our guests. Each table had a picture of us together in one of the parks. We hung wallet size pictures with everyones names on the back. Guests found their name, and matched the wallet size picture to the one on the table where they would be sitting.

All the speeches at my wedding were absolutely beautiful. My father, Dylan’s best man Noah, and my brother Dustin gave the most genuine, heartfelt toasts I have ever heard. My brother’s was really special. To close his thoughtful and witty words, he made a special tribute to my grandmother Kathleen who passed away this February. I never expected her to not be there for my wedding. I almost asked her to sew my wedding dress. She had been looking for her dress to wear. My grandmother truly was a beautiful, beautiful soul. She touched so many lives throughout her years. My family came together in that moment as we remembered my grandmother and everything she was, and everything she taught us. We felt her presence in that moment and it was a great comfort.

Nobody prepares you for how to cut a cake after you are married. Before you are married, cutting a cake is a one-person job, but that goes out the window once you say I do. Now it takes two hands around that knife to slice through a beautiful wedding cake. You should probably practice this if you don’t want to be as awkward as we are. We had an almond pound cake from Cake Creations by Alex Bell in Morganton, NC. She also made the cake for my bridal shower. Her cakes are always perfectly moist and delicious!

We are both music lovers and it was really important to Dylan that we have live music. I took a little convincing because live music is almost always more expensive than a DJ. Once we decided we were going with a band, I decided to send an only slightly creepy Facebook message to the lead singer of one of my absolute favorite bands from Asheville, NC. Let’s just say I got really lucky. I did not think there was any chance the Honeycutters would play at my wedding when I contacted them. I was in shock when we got the contract signed. It took a little pressure off the wedding planning knowing that if nothing else people were going to get to see a really amazing show. Thirty seconds into the first song the dance floor was full and it stayed that way the entire night. The energy from the band and the guests built over the night and I think everyone had an amazing time. If you are on the fence between a band and a DJ, go with the band. That’s a personal opinion but for us it was one of the best decisions we made.

Quite a few family members and friends were shocked and disappointed when the bottom of my dress got covered in mud from walking around outside after the rain. I kind of loved it. It wouldn’t have been my wedding if I didn’t get a little dirty. Dylan likes to call me “messy Kate”. Plus, someone at the reception told me it was “Ombre”.

I wanted to skip the garter toss. The thought of Dylan taking that thing off my leg in front of all those people was slightly creepy and terrifying. I was certain he would feel the same way. Oh No. I found out this was the part of the wedding Dylan had been looking forward to the most, and we would not be skipping it. Because I was uncomfortable with the idea, he was sweet enough to dive in headfirst and take it off with his teeth. HA! If you knew Dylan at all, you would know that is so out of character and hilarious. I am glad we did it. It was so much fun.

Dylan’s sister Hannah caught the bouquet, screamed, and dropped it into the hands of one of Dylan’s best childhood friends Becca. This was one of my favorite memories of the night. That reaction was priceless and hysterical. There was a look of sheer horror in her eyes.

Dancing with my Pop Pop on my wedding day was a few minutes in time I will cherish forever. I have always admired his simple happiness and outlook on life, and he has taught me many important lessons over the years. He is a wonderful man that I will always look up to.

Take time to think about the things like this that will be important to you. Everything happens so fast on your wedding day. If someone hadn’t pulled me to the side towards the end of the night, I would have missed this precious opportunity.

Our grand sparkler exit would have been just perfect if we had been leaving! After we made our way through the lines of burning fire, we hid beside the house for a few minutes, decided that was silly, and then I ran inside to change out of that dress. The house we stayed in that night was about a mile away. We ended up walking with most of our friends away from the wedding to the campground on the other side of town where all the groomsmen were staying in camping cabins.

The morning after the wedding, a guest out on his morning jog caught me sneaking off alone. I was walking briskly through town trying to make it to the Inn before they stopped serving breakfast. I am embarrassed to admit that I left my husband sleeping. However, I think I completely redeemed myself by returning to the house with a hot plate for him to wake up to!

It is amazing how everything sort of falls into place on the day of your wedding. You really don’t have time to think, but somehow it all happens the way you had planned. I don’t think I would have changed anything about our beautiful wedding in Hot Springs. The North Carolina Mountains will always be home and we will continue to return and celebrate our love. I am a happy happy wife!

Dylan and I were beyond thrilled when we saw our wedding photos for the first time. We made a whole date night out of it. We cooked a delicious meal, opened a bottle of wine, and took our time looking through each and every single picture. I am still looking at them everyday and finding something new that I missed before. Heather and Jason from Revival photography captured so many special moments in these images. They captured the essence of our relationship and everything about our day just perfectly. These two are amazing people, and make such a wonderful team. We are fortunate to have twice as many photos and twice as many memories... I have and will continue to recommend Revival Photography to anyone getting married in Western North Carolina. Their photos are beautiful, unique, oh so romantic, and exactly what we were looking for!
